I have just finished this new engraving. It is directly based on Rembrandt's famous crucifixion group - his only graphic work from 1653. My copperplate is exactly the same size as his and I used the same tools: burin and drypoint. I wanted to translate Golgotha into a simple metacognitive signal that can be understood at a glance. Today the first proof arrived - and completely unexpectedly I saw Auschwitz in front of me, the kilometers of electric fences and the posts for the executions ...

gerade habe ich diesen Kupferstich abgeschlossen, der sich direkt auf die berühmte Kreuzigungsgruppe von Rembrandt bezieht - seine einzige Graphik aus dem Jahr 1653. Meine Kupferplatte hat genau dieselbe Größe wie seine, und ich habe dieselben Werkzeuge verwendet: Stichel und Kaltnadel. Ich wollte Golgatha in ein simples metakognitives Signal übersetzen, das auf einen Blick erfassbar ist. Heute kam nun der erste Andruck - und völlig unerwartet sah ich Auschwitz vor mir, die kilometerlangen Elektrozäune und die Pfosten für die Exekutionen …
